Helm of Nikolskoe – 12th–13th Century Rus & Steppe Warrior Reconstruction

The Helm of Nikolskoe is a stunning recreation of a historic helmet unearthed near Nikolskoye village in the Orel region of Russia. Dating to the late 12th–13th centuries, this open-faced helmet reflects the distinctive armour style favored by steppe nomads and the principalities of Rus.

Characterized by its riveted dome construction and unique facial mask with eye openings and nasal guard, this design provided excellent visibility and protection when paired with a mail aventail, shielding the wearer’s face and neck in battle.

The original artefact was discovered in 1866 and long thought to have fallen out of use after the Tatar-Mongol invasion. However, new archaeological evidence reveals that this helmet type endured well into the 14th century, prized for its practicality and craftsmanship.

Our faithful reconstruction is crafted from 2.3mm+ heat-rolled mild steel (or spring steel upon request) and features a full leather harness interior and secure chin strap. It is built to museum standards for Eastern and Huscarl reenactment and offers several customization options for maille and protection.
